Half of the KE Fam went to Big Bend National park for Thanksgiving. We had originally planned to sleep in our van every night, but opted for a motel when the temperatures weren't as chilly as we were imagining. We reallllly don't like sleeping in the van when it's still summer temps outside, but we can just blame it on our dog, Pilgrim, being uncomfortable in the heat.
We stayed at an RV park / motel in Terlingua, Texas; just a 10 minute drive from the park. One really awesome surprise was, on Thanksgiving Day, the motel opened up it's cafe and served a full Thanksgiving buffet to the whole town for free! We ate like kings in our motel room watching South Park. Which, in my mind, is the only way I would want to spend Thanksgiving.
We woke up at 5:00am the day before Thanksgiving and made the 1.5 hour drive to a hot spring located on the far east side of the park. We got there to find a few other families had the same idea, but they made room and we all soaked in the magic. The hot spring sat, literally, on the Rio Grande. Mexico was less than 20 feet away. We would soak in the spring until we were overheated, and then dip our feet into the freezing waters of the river. It was gorgeous and unlike anything we've ever experienced.
